A service dog’s tasks should address its handler’s disability-related needs and be safe for both members of the team. Useful possibilities include:
- Retrieving a dropped phone or another safe item.
- Bringing an accessible assistance device.
- Carrying a light, suitable object.
- Operating an accessible door button.
- Opening a light door with an appropriate tug.
- Using an adapted light switch.
- Helping remove a suitable clothing item.
- Moving safe laundry items at a comfortable height.
- Summoning another person for help.
- Bringing an emergency communication device.
These are ideas for individual assessment, not a promise that every dog can learn every task. Keep medicines securely packaged, avoid sharp or harmful objects, and never let a task obstruct a safe transfer.
The original suggestions for wheelchair pulling, lifting a person’s position and bracing transfers have been removed. A harness does not establish that weight-bearing assistance is safe; consult appropriate veterinary and mobility professionals about alternatives.
