A Safer Fourth of July With Your Dog

Consider both your needs and your dog’s comfort before joining a busy holiday event. Even a well-trained service dog can find fireworks, heat and crowds difficult.

Do not use an intense celebration as the first exposure to loud noises. Practice gradually in comfortable conditions beforehand, and discuss serious noise fear with your veterinarian. The former remedy and product recommendations were not evidence of effectiveness.

Keep identification and microchip contacts current, carry water and a suitable bowl, and choose safe leash equipment. Do not improvise a belt attachment without considering pulling, entanglement and your own stability.

Plan shade, breaks and an exit. Leave or create more distance if the dog is distressed. You may prefer a quieter celebration or backup assistance so the dog can rest at home.
