Five Hot-Weather Care Tips for Service Dogs

Hot weather may require shorter outings, backup support and more time in a cool place.

  1. Choose suitable conditions. Use shade and cooler indoor spaces; a fan alone does not make every room safe.
  2. Keep fresh water available. Needs vary. Do not use a fixed allowance as a limit.
  3. Adjust timing and activity. Shorten or cancel demanding outings rather than relying on a cooling bandana.
  4. Avoid hot surfaces. Check pavement and other footing. Seek veterinary advice for burned or painful paws instead of treating them with unspecified ointment.
  5. Plan grooming individually. Ask about suitable coat care; one minimum coat length does not fit every dog.

Never leave a dog unattended in a vehicle. Suspected heat illness calls for prompt veterinary attention.
