Invisible Struggles, Unwavering Support: My 20 Years with a Lifesaving Service Dog

Advertisements

For over two decades, my life has been enriched by the incredible companionship of a Service Dog. They’ve become more than just a furry friend; they’re my partner in navigating the world. Now, I want to share some insights I’ve learned along the way, hoping to bridge the gap between Service Dog handlers and the public.

1. Working Wonders, Quietly

Imagine walking down the street, and your world suddenly goes blurry. That’s a common experience for me. But then, there’s a gentle nudge against my leg, a soft head nudging my hand. My Service Dog, sensing my rising anxiety, is guiding me to a safe spot. It’s a silent symphony of support, a constant reminder that I’m not alone. Remember, when you see us out and about, my dog is likely focused on their job. Just like you wouldn’t interrupt a doctor at work, please give us space to function as a team.

2. More Than Just a Pet

My Service Dog might not wear a bright vest or have a specific “look,” but that doesn’t diminish their vital role. They can be the difference between a safe day and a potentially dangerous situation. Once, during a crowded event, my blood sugar dropped, sending me dizzy. Thankfully, my dog alerted me in time, allowing me to avoid a potentially serious fall.

3. Respecting Boundaries

I understand curiosity! My dog is an amazing companion, and I get why people want to interact with them. However, it can be intrusive to ask about my disability or bombard me with questions. It’s like a doctor asking you about every detail of your life during a quick appointment. A simple “hello” or a smile is always appreciated!

4. Not Every Conversation Leads to Playtime

Sometimes, I just need to run errands or get from point A to point B. While I love chatting about my furry friend, being stopped for lengthy conversations can be overwhelming. Imagine trying to do your grocery shopping with your boss constantly asking work-related questions!

5. Size Doesn’t Define Service

Service Dogs come in all shapes and sizes! Don’t be surprised to see a pint-sized poodle or a gentle giant Golden Retriever. Once, a well-meaning man questioned my dog’s abilities because he was a smaller breed. However, my dog’s exceptional nose for changes in my blood sugar has saved me countless times.

6. A Life of Balance

Just because my dog works hard doesn’t mean they don’t have fun! We schedule plenty of playtime and cuddles throughout the day. Remember, a happy, well-rested dog is a better working dog!

7. Treat Them Like Equipment

Think of my Service Dog as an extension of myself, like a wheelchair or hearing aid. They deserve the same respect and courtesy you’d give to any medical device. Imagine someone trying to pet your oxygen tank – it’s simply disruptive to our work.

8. The Power of the Law

Federal law allows Service Dogs to accompany their handlers in public places. While rare, I’ve encountered businesses hesitant about entry due to “no pet” policies. It’s important to remember that Service Dogs are not pets – they’re essential for our well-being.

9. Standards Over Certification

Service Dog Standards (servicedogstandards.org) offers resources and guidance for both professional training programs and owner-trained dogs. Both professionally trained and owner-trained Service Dogs are legally recognized, as long as they meet the established standards.

10. A Life I Didn’t Choose, a Partner I Cherish

Having a disability isn’t something I wished for. But my Service Dog has transformed my life for the better. I often hear, “I wish my dog could go everywhere with me!” However, having a Service Dog requires dedication, extensive training, and a unique bond. It’s a partnership, not just a perk.

I hope this helps bridge the gap between Service Dog handlers and the public. By understanding our needs and respecting our team dynamic, you can help ensure a smooth and pleasant experience for everyone!
