Canada’s Criminal Code section 445.01 addresses wilfully killing or injuring specified law-enforcement, military, and service animals without lawful excuse.
For an indictable conviction, the provision specifies a maximum five-year sentence. The six-month minimum applies when a law-enforcement animal is killed in the offence; it is not a blanket minimum for every injury to every covered animal. A separate summary-conviction option also exists.
The section has specific definitions, including a written professional-institution training certification in its definition of service animal. That definition is particular to this Canadian criminal provision and should not be substituted for U.S. ADA public-access rules.
AP’s original 2015 article discussed the law following Quanto’s death. Its individual-case details and arrest-count claims have not been independently verified in this review.
