Five Breed Choices to Research for Service Work

Labrador Retrievers, Golden Retrievers, Labrador–Golden crosses, Standard Poodles, and German Shepherds appeared in AP’s original breed overview. None guarantees a suitable service-dog candidate.

Evaluate the individual dog’s health, comfort, temperament, size, grooming, and willingness to learn in the environments you use. A cross does not necessarily inherit the best traits of both parents or guarantee better health.

Any breed or size of dog can meet the ADA definition. Breed choice alone does not establish task ability, public behavior, or allergy compatibility. No breed is a substitute for appropriate mobility equipment or an assessment of whether a proposed task is physically suitable.

The Seeing Eye describes Morris Frank’s 1928 partnership with the German Shepherd Buddy in its history. That history does not establish suitability for every modern team.
