Common Service and Working Dog Breed Choices

Dogs used for assistance, detection, search, or other work need abilities suited to the particular role. Breed alone does not establish suitability.

For ADA service-animal access, any breed and size of dog can qualify when the individual dog is trained for disability-related work or tasks and meets the applicable behavior requirements. Select a candidate with help appropriate to the tasks, health needs, and working environment.

The earlier breed list included a recommendation to choose giant breeds for weight-bearing brace work. That recommendation has been removed. A dog’s size does not establish that loading its body is safe.
